With more athletes, from amateurs to professionals, looking to fine-tune their performance, sports nutritionists are needed to provide expert guidance based on the latest research. In addition, there is a growing demand for sports nutrition in non-traditional settings, such as corporate wellness programs and public health initiatives, creating even more opportunities for professionals in this field.

Nutritionists in private practice may also be hired to consult for individual athletes or teams for special competitions such as the Olympics. Some jobs may be available in stores and for companies which sell sports nutrition supplements.

Sports Nutritionists with one to four years of experience in the field can expect to make salaries ranging from $34,392 to $59,495 per year. Most dietitians and nutritionists working for a company can expect to make $33,433 to $61,000 per year with a median salary of $42,261. Those working for non-profit organizations such as community recreation centers can expect to earn salaries ranging from $39,786 to $53,145.

Fitness-focused nutrition jobs can be found in many commercial gyms and fitness centers, as well as community centers such as YMCAs. Individuals will need at least a bachelor’s degree in a nutrition program to qualify for this type of job and in some cases a Registered Dietitian is required.

Additional certifications in the fitness industry can be beneficial for those working in fitness-focused nutrition. It can demonstrate the diversity of your knowledge and make you more marketable for fitness nutrition jobs which also might include duties such as personal training or group exercise instruction. For example, certifications in personal training or health and fitness instructing from the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Council on Exercise are well known and respected in the field.

In order to be successful in the major, background knowledge in related sciences should be obtained. Students have the option to take the undergraduate courses prior to the start graduate program or as leveling courses during their graduate program. If electing to take these courses while in the graduate program (leveling courses), it may take additional time to complete the other degree requirements due to sequencing of classes.

Once you have been a registered dietitian for a minimum of two years and have accumulated 2,000 practice hours in sports nutrition, you can apply to become a certified sports dietitian from the CDR. To receive the Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) you must pass a board exam that covers a variety of sports nutrition-related topics. Examination specifications include but are not limited to energy metabolism, fueling for training and competition, fluid and electrolyte balance, sports foods and supplements, clinical sports nutrition (disordered eating, energy availability and balance, weight management, special populations), and nutrition administration.

In order to become a registered dietitian, you must successfully complete your internship then sit for the RD exam. Your eligibility requirements to sit for the exam are determined by the Commission for Dietetic Registration (CDR). Note, effective January 1, 2024, a graduate degree will be required to be eligible to take the exam. Once you pass the RD exam, you can call yourself a registered dietitian and you can begin working.
